Where to Eat in Canada 1984/85

Last year the Home Food Inn moved to a new location and the move brought with it an expanded menu, a liquor license, higher prices – and all the problems that go with those amenities. The owners have had extensive experience in China, France and the United States, and they work with genuine enthusiasm. But when the sous-chef is in charge of the kitchen the cooking is less reliable. Higher costs are reflected in smaller portions, tinned vegetables, pre-shelled shimps. But the fish Peking-style is still delightful and so are most of the spicy dishes. Several of the items they’ve added to the menu this year (sliced duck with mushrooms, fried lamb with scallon) are memorable and the noodle dishes are all good buys. The service is desultory, but you can linger profitably over a dish of spun apples and bananas coated with sweet syrup and seasame seeds. This year, however, they’ve started refusing reservations for fewer than five. Twos and fours have to take their chances.
